The Time Period and the Characters-Joana Tsuhlares

The time period, I believe, has a huge impact on how our characters behave.  For example there are very strict, new money old money differences between the neighborhoods and you don't see that as much today.  Also, Tom brings up old and racist ideas at super that we simply wouldn't see today.  But the time period effects our characters in bigger ways as well.  For instance Nick's restlessness from his time in WWI.  He says, "...I participated in that delayed Teutonic migration known as the Great War.  I enjoyed the counter-raid so thoroughly that I came  back restless" (Fitzgerald 3).  So, even the basis for our character's setting can be related to the time period in which they lived.

  1. There are so many ways that the time period impacts the characters in the book. I also did my post about the time period, and the reason I gave are different, but all of them are true. Something that I forgo to mention in mind that I was reminded of from reading this is that the war had just ended. Even though there was a huge financial boom that caused excitement for everyone, the war had an impacted on the reactions of the people. War is a bad time for everyone whether they are fighting or not, so once the war was over, everyone was happy about that, and the financial boom added to their happiness which is why I believe the people wanted to constantly celebrate.

    1. My opinion kind of differs. The end of the war may have caused some celebration for the first few months to a year after it had ended, but not for 9/10 years. Most of the celebration during this time period was due to the stock market and wealth being more common. It was also because of the Harlem Renaissance going on during this time period. It was a period of artistic inspiration.

  2. I agree with you in the fact that certain ideas and things will be interesting because the time period it's taking place in. In our society today I believe there is still a lot of "new money old money differences" depending on where you're coming from. Our grandparents generation for example is still going to be more stingy then we will be. Just like if you're from a right-winged family you might not see as much difference, but I see where you're coming from and definitely think the time period and money has a huge effect on this book. - Jared Jorden
