Tom Buchanan
In The Great Gatspy Tom Buchanan is super rich. He is one of those people who love to show off what he has. I personally believe he isn't in love with the money as much as he likes people thinking he has money. He is very rude and arrogant. He makes people feel bad about themselves for not having as much as he does. He shows everything he has off to Nick basically bragging about it.
He also cheats on his trophy wife daisy with a girl that doesn't have any money. In one of the scenes he gets a phone call from Myrtle while the rest of the people are sitting there awkwardly (Fitzgerald 13). He is a man that doesn't think he should have any consequences for what he does. Daisy deep down knows what Tom does, but she doesn't want to end things because of the social status that Tom gives her.

I definitely agree with this. I see Tom as the antagonist in this story. Although I think Tom sees money and social status as the same thing. You cannot have one without the other. Tom is in love with both of the concepts of social status and money. -Carson Corrick
ReplyDeleteTom is a terrible man. He is the stereotypical "rich guy". He cares so much about what everyone thinks of him. He is married to Daisy, a perfect girl, but is also having an affair with Myrtle, a girl who cannot even compare to Daisy. I feel like Tom takes part in the affair because he doesn't want people to think that he is under Daisy's control. He is someone who has to have power over everything, even Daisy. That also makes it harder for Daisy to leave Tom. Divorce was uncommon and frowned upon then, and Daisy and Tom both do not want to be thought less of in society. -Olivia Palotay
