I think it's really interesting how the narrator is Nick Carraway in The Great Gatspy. I feel as if Nick gives the story a suspicious feeling like he doesn't actually know what's going on. Nick is next door neighbors with Gatspy which gives him an interesting view on everything that goes on at his house.
Along with that, Nick lives right across the lake from Tom Buchanan. Early in the story Tom and Gatspy have no connection, but they have an intermediate source in Nick. I believe the author is trying to make the reader make some sort of connection between Tom and Gatspy through the eyes of Nick.
I think the authors main goal is to leave everything at a non favored view. Nick is the character that seems to somewhat know everyone and have no preference who he is around. The author is trying to get keep us interested before we find out a big connection later in the story.
Nick does give a very interesting perspective of the story because he is not used to the life that Tom and Daisy lie, but he is very open to anything. I think that later in the story Nick will have a connection with Gatsby, and that is why Nick has played such a big role in the book so far. In chapter three, Gatsby invites Nick to his house and invites him on his boat the next day which is very unusual. Most people do not get an invite from Gatsby. I believe that we will find out soon why a man as great as Gatsby is interest in the average Nick Carrawy, and I think seeing it from Nick view will make the story more interesting. -Olivia Palotay
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree that Nick's unbiased opinion on the lives of the rich families he lives around provides an interesting view into the story. It definitely seems as though he is interested in learning about their actions, without prior judging. I also see the potential for a connection between Gatsby and Tom through Nik, and I look forward to having Nick elaborate further.

DeleteI can see there being a possible connection to Tom and Gatsby. What if Tom and Gatsby despise each other? Is there a reason for it? I do not recall Tom attending Gatsby's party. There must be a reason as to why Tom didn't show up considering almost everyone was invited.
